Who is Serin Bussell?

I grew up in North Carolina, raised by a single mom, with help from my grandparents. My mom worked hard to provide me and my sister with stability, but we still ended up moving a lot and attending many different schools. This experience taught me how important it is to support our working families by making sure they have family and medical leave, retirement benefits, and strong unions. It taught me that we must ensure our education system is robust and excellent across regions – that where you live shouldn’t dictate the quality of schools in your community.

After college, I moved to Portland, where my, now, husband and I rented a number of apartments, constantly moving to maintain the same rent payments for smaller and smaller apartments, while working in retail and going to school. I know how challenging it is for people to find work that pays the rent in Oregon, let alone purchase a home, and how much harder that gets for folks every day, which is why I will fight for renter protections and investment in developing affordable single- and multi-family housing.

I love the Pacific Northwest and appreciate how easy it is to access some of the most beautiful places in the region, just by taking a short walk or driving less than an hour. As the Board Chair for the Crag Law Center, a nonprofit conducting “legal aid for the environment”, I am proud of Crag’s accomplishments to keep Nestle from bottling public water in the Gorge and fighting for the rights of young people to be protected by the government against the threats of climate change. I will continue to be an advocate for protecting our environment and defending it against being sold off to the highest bidder.

As your State Representative, I will work everyday to make sure Oregon’s education system is strong, housing is affordable and all Oregonians have a roof over their head, and we leave future generations with a healthy environment. I will be your advocate in Salem for safe schools and communities, for ensuring all Oregonians have healthcare coverage, and for elevating the voices of those who have been marginalized and underrepresented. I look forward to being your next State Representative from House District 33.
